the BIG THREE O bash

Friday, July 30, 2010

So today is the big day of the BIG THREE O bash! I'm so excited for tonight. I still have a lot to do to prepare for tonight, but I am getting so extremely excited for it. There will be lots of good food, good company and just some relaxing time with friends! Hope your weekend is fun, exciting and relaxing (it can happen... right).

I just love the coloring in this photo- the sea green, yellow (of course) & coral combination.

ps... I'ts official I'm heading to China for two whole weeks! I leave in one month- August 30th. I am beyond ecstatic!!!!! This is my birthday present to myself. I'm going with my sister and brother-in-law. I can't wait to shop, see a temple, shop and shop some more. I have started my list of things I want to find. Oh the joys of searching and finding treasures.

BIG THREE O and party favors

Thursday, July 29, 2010

Well tomorrow I'm turning the BIG THREE O! I can't believe three decades have gone by.. wow where has the time gone. I feel like I'm still 23 okay 21.... forever 21. Now I can understand how "older" people always said they still feel young cause your age changes, but nothing else does. So in planning my BIG THREE O party for a few close friends I have had thoughts of party favors, invitations, desserts to knock your socks off and much much more on my mind. Here are a few of my favorite party favors from the one and only Martha Stewart. These are simple, yet still classy & fun depending on your color scheme and most importantly easy to DIY.
I love the ties and wrappers over the clear boxes in these first two photos. Just adding a simple ribbon and paper wrapper can transform any ordinary box into a treasured favor.
If you are looking for a party favor using cellophane bags or wrapping here are two really cute options. The first one is simply make a tube with your cellophane, but I like how they placed them sideways. (this could also work if your treats are rectangular. Cellophane bags can be tricky to keep upright and hold their form by place a study base in the same size of the treat. You can then decorate these with a simple sticker.
Or if your into bags as your choice of a party favor- print personal designs onto white bags to spice up your favors. This is a good option if you want a specific dessert or treat that would "clash" with your color scheme but you just must have it. Place it in a well designed bag and enjoy!

ruffle fabric

Saturday, July 24, 2010

The girls at Ruffle Fabric have done it again with this taupe dress. I am swooning over this fabric and all the colors that it comes in... and the new fall line and colors are so inspiring with the dusty pinks, lavenders and neutrals.  I can't wait to get my hands on a couple yards of their fabric. Here are some of their creations from the original ruffle fabric source.
and of course I had to add one of this color... since yellow it is my favorite color!

inspiring cakes

Tuesday, July 13, 2010

Who says you can't have your cake and eat it too... A cake design for every style of party. I think this cake would be jaw dropping at a summer pool party... splish splashing in the sun

For a more elegant look, a simple design from the Cake Girls in Chicago. I like how the stand doesn't detract from the beauty of the cake.

If you are wanting individual cakes for an occasion, these chocolate ganache designs are stunning.

It's friday and the sun is finally shinning again in Southern California. I hope you all have a great weekend. Isn't this photo beautiful of the Mediterranean off the coast of Italy. The colors are so vibrant. I want to jump into that clear water.

favorite cookie.... chocolate chip!

Thursday, July 8, 2010

So my favorite cookie of all time is by far a chocolate chip cookie with just a few chocolate chips... I just love the dough!!!! In my search for the PERFECT chocolate chip cookie I have found a couple recipes over the last ten years that are just delicious. I like each of them in different circumstances and for different reasons. It depends if you are going to eat them right away, freeze them (oh I have the best recipe for frozen chocolate chip cookies... you eat them just as they are unthawing- purely divine!), have to make 18 dozen or if you are watching your weight- the difference of 1 pound of butter or just 2 cubes... big differences! Here is my new favorite I found about a year ago on just-spotted.com that I made for Will's 3rd  birthday party. Check out his owl party by wants and wishes here. I have been wanting to do a chocolate chip cookie taste test. Wouldn't that be fun. Bake your 5 or 6 favorite chocolate chip cookies and have your neighbors over and see which one is the winner or to make life easier on yourself, you could ask each person to bring 3 dozen chocolate chip cookies (and their recipe of course) and have the neighborhood taste test for the winner.  hmmm.... I might be on to something!

Big, Fat, Chewy Chocolate Chip Cookies

Ingredients:
2 cups flour
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
3/4 cup butter, MELTED
1 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 cup white sugar
1 tb vanilla extract
1 egg (room temperature)
1 egg yolk (room temperature)
2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips; but for those who like few chocolate chips like me- add only 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 cups of chocolate chips

Directions:
1. Sift together the flour, baking soda and salt in a bowl and set aside
2. In a medium bowl, cream together the melted butter, brown sugar and white sugar until well blended.
3. Beat in vanilla, egg, egg yolk until light and creamy.
4. Mix in sifted ingredients until just blended.
5. Stir in the chocolate chips by hand using a wooden spoon.
6. Chill the cookie dough in the frig for 45-2 hours (to counteract the melted butter)
7. Preheat oven to 325 degrees
8. Drop cookie dough 1/4 cup at a time onto cookie sheets.
9. Bake for 13-15 minutes, until the edges are lightly golden brown. This is the key! They might seem gooey in the middle, but just let them cool on the baking sheets for a couple minutes before transferring them & they will be perfect.
10. Wrap up half a dozen in cellophane with big bow and tag from etsy.com/shop/wantsandwishesdesign and give to your closest friend, neighbor or ME!!!

Makes 18-20 cookies

The illustrations on these cards from Fine Day Press are magical and scream summer to me. I hope to find myself soon sitting on a porch swing with one of these in hand.... day dreaming! How do you like to eat a popsicle?

Hope you all had a great 4th of July. Where will you be traveling this summer? Will you visit an old friend that live far away or discover a new country, city of town? How will you be traveling... by boat, plane, car or perhaps by hot air balloon.

let them eat cake

Friday, July 2, 2010

Lately I have been loving pastel colors mingled with bright hues, french design, macaroons and cakes. Here are a few inspiring photos from the Marie Antoinette movie a couple years ago. The costumes and set design was breathtaking. I would love to do a dessert table with these photos as the inspiration!

I am hearting those cakes and pedestal after pedestals of desserts that the famed French patisserie Laduree created for the movie
